Last Thursday, Beyond Meat (BYND) went public on the NASDAQ. The stock, priced at $25.00 per share for the IPO, closed the day at $65.75 and has remained in that range on Friday.
This was a 163% gain, the best debut session of any U.S. listing since 2008 among IPOs that raised at least $200 million, giving the company a valuation of $3.8 billion.
Its original celebrity investors included Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Chastain, which probably accounted for some added investor attention.
Beyond Meat makes plant-based alternatives to beef and chicken products. This segment of alternative-to-meat products is being driven by consumer interest in health, animal welfare, and environmental issues.
There are many perspectives on this company, this market opportunity, and the technologies used to make these products.
Since this Blog is about science and entrepreneurship, my next post will unpack this story from this perspective.
In the meantime, take a look at this company and this segment to develop your own perspective, and then we can compare notes in my next post.
